Family Law

At Ouverson, Guest & Carter, PA, we have years of experience representing individuals throughout South Carolina in all forms of family law matters. Our firm is skilled in negotiation, arbitration, and litigation – putting together the compassionate strategies needed to protect your individual rights and your future.

Family Law Attorney, Thomas “Val” Guest, has been practicing family law for over 25 years. As your law firm, we have knowledge in all forms of family law, and we offer representation in all types of family law concerns – divorce, child support, alimony and custody, name change, adoptions, and common-law marriage.

Adoptions

Our law firm is here to help you when you need assistance handling the legalities of seeking an adoption. Adoption is when an adult legally becomes the guardian of a child, therefore incurring the responsibilities and rights of a parent. Adoption law is a very complex and emotional division of law. When seeking an adoption, legal questions arise. We at Ouverson, Guest & Carter, PA have the skills and experience needed to help you navigate the paperwork and hurdles of an adoption.

Alimony & Child Support

We can provide skilled representation throughout alimony and child support negotiations to ensure that your interests are protected, and to ensure that your children enjoy the support and lifestyle they are accustomed to and deserve. Child support and alimony agreements are some of the most important details within a divorce agreement, framing how the children will be provided for while considering the lifestyle of both spouses. Our firm provides understanding representation throughout the process.

Child Custody

Our attorneys are experienced in custody and family law proceedings. We can provide creative solutions that allow both parents to continue cultivating healthy relationships with their children. Child custody is one of the most hotly contested aspects of divorce. As both parents want to spend as much time with the children as possible, emotions can flare. It is important that you have representation that you can trust to guide you through this process, advocate for your rights as a parent, and work toward an agreement that is in the best interest of your child or children.

We at Ouverson, Guest & Carter have years of experience handling custody matters. We proceed with the detailed understanding necessary to put together strategic solutions that will accommodate both parent’s schedules and create the best possible routine for the child.

Common-Law Marriage

South Carolina is one of the few states that still recognizes a common-law marriage. We have experience in representing clients when legal problems may arise in common-law marriages. As you navigate the emotional side of filing for divorce, choose representation that you can trust to keep a level head and skillfully direct the legal aspects of the separation. At each step in the separation process, we will provide you with a clear understanding of your legal options and the advantages and disadvantages of each choice. Our firm is committed to keeping your goals and wishes as the priority throughout the separation or divorce, and we aim to help you achieve the most agreeable outcome possible for the next chapter of your life.

Divorce

At Ouverson, Guest & Carter, PA, our attorneys provide experienced and compassionate divorce representation. The legal outcome of a divorce or family law matter will largely frame the future of both spouses and their children. The stakes are high and emotions are often at the forefront. You need experienced legal representation at your side, guiding you through the decisions at hand and working to deliver the best possible results. As you navigate the emotional side of filing for divorce, choose an attorney that you can trust to keep a level head and skillfully direct the legal aspects of the separation.

At each step in the separation process, we will provide you with a clear understanding of your legal options and the positive or negative ramifications of each choice. Our firm is committed to keeping your goals and wishes as the priority throughout the divorce process, and we offer you sound legal advice to assist in preparing you for the future.

Division Of Property

While our family law attorneys provide experienced and compassionate divorce representation, the division of property, assets, and debt are also key issues that must be decided during divorce proceedings. In South Carolina, all property that is held between the spouses during the marriage is to be divided equitably. There is no standardized way of doing this, and equitably does not necessarily mean 50/50. Our lawyers understand the key strategies in dividing property in an equitable manner, and we will ensure that you are provided with all that you are entitled to.

Mediation

We are fortunate to have a part of our law firm that focuses on both circuit court and family court mediation. Mediation is a meeting with parties who have a dispute and select a trained mediator who acts as a neutral person to help guide the mediation process. The mediator does not favor either side of the dispute, but assists the parties in negotiating in order to reach a mutual resolution. The mediator acts as the voice of reason, promotes constructive and creative bargaining tactics, brings closure to the issues, and records the settlement in writing. Our attorneys have the experience and skills necessary to act as trained mediators and to calmly guide the mediation process.

Name Change

At Ouverson, Guest & Carter, PA, we have experience representing clients of all ages who are seeking a name change. Whether you desire a name change because of a marriage, a divorce, an adoption, or some other major life event – there is a legal process to follow. Our family law attorney will guide you in the right direction to achieve your requested name change as quickly and smoothly as possible.
